Going Out: The Stahl House
After many years on my to-do list, I finally toured the iconic Stahl House. The timing recently felt more urgent after learning the home has now been brought to market by the original owners' children for $25,000,000.
Knowing the property was entering its next chapter, I knew I wanted to experience the home in its original state — which, amazingly, it still is.
The booking calendar was completely full, so I waited patiently for a date to open, and eventually one did. I booked the last tour of the day, which turned out to be the right call.
Watching the lights of Los Angeles slowly come on from that vantage point is one of those rare moments where architecture, landscape, and city all align.

Eating Out: Bar Etoile
Recently I've found myself twice at Bar Etoile, a French-inspired bistro — which, for me, is always the tell.
Having lived nearby in Koreatown for many years in the 90's, I can't help but think how much I would have loved having a place like this nearby back then.
There's a noticeable shift happening along Western Avenue, right around Melrose Hill and into Koreatown. You can feel the new energy and thoughtful concepts. It's not forced, and that's what makes it interesting. The area is stepping into itself in a new way — still gritty and layered, but with these moments of refinement woven in.
No surprise Bar Etoile has earned a spot in the Michelin Guide. The ambience and food speak for themselves. It's the kind of place where you go once and then find yourself thinking about it again a few days later. I'm not going to tell you what to order, because honestly, whatever you choose, you can't go wrong.

Farther Afield: Modernism Week 2026
In February, many of us from the California Collective gathered in La Quinta for the inaugural inclusion of La Quinta Country Club on the official Modernism Week tour — the result of our Coachella Valley member Robert Andrew Millar's vision and persistence. Robert understood the architectural and historical significance of the community and pushed to have it recognized on a larger stage.
