Going Out: FORT: LA
Architecture and a night out? Yes, please. My friend Rod and I joined FORT: LA—Friends of Residential Treasures: Los Angeles—for "Schindler and the Moon." My favorite part was getting to experience a Schindler home in such an intimate way, with an interested (and interesting), group of fellow LA natives.
We even ran into people we knew. In a city this big, I love when that happens.
Spending time in a special home, taking in the details and talking with people who are just as curious about it, is a different experience from looking at photographs.

Eating Out: Chiang Rai
A little Northern Thailand in Long Beach.
Chiang Rai on East Anaheim Street is not your typical Thai restaurant. Their menu keeps guessing at every visit. Mind you, familiar Thai favorites, are available, but the "Chiang Rai Local Food" section is devoted to regional specialties. A reason to venture beyond the usual order.
Among the specialties is ribeye khao soi, with egg noodles and thinly sliced beef gently cooked by the hot curry broth.
For my Long Beach friends—and my LA friends looking for an excuse to head south—one for your list.
